No Longer A Maniac
fter recording six albums
with 10,000 Maniacs, Natal-
ie Merchant set out to launch
a solo career with the release
of her first album, Tigerlily.
Ms. Merchant, who left 10,000 Maniacs
after recording one of its most successful
albums, 10,000 Maniacs MTV Unplugged,
brings her performance to the Fox Theatre
on Sunday.
"The Unplugged album taught me that
a single live performance could be very, very
powerful," Ms. Merchant said. "I tried to
AL
record Tigerlily in that spirit."
The album features a variety of Ms. Mer-
chant's newest work, including
the popular song "Carni-
val," about city streets seen
through the eyes of a
woman. She sees them
transformed by her own
perceptions.
Natalie
Merchant: "I've
walked these
streets."
Is A Kiss Just A Kiss?
ip
eter marries Rita only six
weeks after he meets her.
When a mysterious old man
appears at their wedding,
both newlyweds think he is
the other's relative.
So when the old man asks Rita
for a kiss, she politely obliges.
Then, things get weird. Rita's
behavior changes dramatically,
and Peter realizes the old man is
now Rita and Rita is the old man
(remember, it's a play).
What follows is a comic scene of
mistaken identity where Peter and
the old man, who is Rita, try to
trap Rita, who is the old man, into
switching back.
Prelude to a Kiss runs through
Nov. 30 at the Hilberry Theatre.
