der the direction of Daniel
Braude for 35 years, performs on
the High Holidays.
His annual cantorial concert
in June has featured prominent
voices from throughout North
America, always including his
own.
Cantor Klein has trained three
professionals serving congrega-
tions today, and also Beth
Shalom member Dr. Joseph
Lewis, who has led High Holiday
services the last few years at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center.
His B'nai Moshe lay cantors,
who lead services when the can-
tor is absent, include Milton
Resnick, Dr. Jerome Horwitz, Ira
Harris, Mr. Rabinovitz, Leonard
Wanetik, Calvin Weiss and
Daniel Weiner.
This "cantor's cadre" will lead
B'nai Moshe while the congre-
gation searches for a new cantor,
Mr. Rabinovitz said. He plans to
form a search committee in Jan-
uary.
"We are not looking for a
tremendous voice, but someone
who can be cantor and do pro-
gramming and help out the rab-
bi," Mr. Rabinovitz said. "It will
be a more active role which Can-
tor Klein isn't physically able to
do anymore."
Cantor Klein also is credited
with a pivotal role when B'nai
Moshe moved from Oak Park to
West Bloomfield. During the
three years the congregation met
at the Jewish Community Cen-
ter and was without a rabbi, "he
saved the shul," said past presi-
dent Michael Grand.
"I don't think we would have
got the building built without
him. He came to symbolize the
shul and he gave us the strength.
He was a constant. Through all
the years, he was just there for
us."
Robert Roth agreed. When the
decision was made to move from
Oak Park, the cantor's wife was
dying.
"It was an emotional time for
the hazzan, and he talked about
retiring," Mr. Roth said. "I begged
him to stay with the shul, and his
staying had a lot to do with keep-
ing B'nai Moshe together."
