Israelis Seek Merck Business Jerusalem — Koffolk Vitamins and Fine Chemicals has opened a third factory, its second in the Ramat Hovav industrial park. A 10-year contract between Koffolk and pharmaceutical gi- ant Merck and Co. was the dri- ving force behind the new plant, which cost $18 million. Koffolk is owned by U.S.-based Philipp Brothers Chemicals, which is owned by the Bendheim family. The company recently signed a long-term $66 billion contract with Merck and will become the sole manufacturer of the animal health drug amprolium, which is based on Merck technology. Koffolk owner Jack Bendheim hopes to convince Merck to in- vest in Israel. Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin met with Don Fitzenberg, executive director of Merck AgVet, and Kerry Mur- phy, of its technology depart- ment.
