statements, but also in the way
she went about business. Ms.
Kosins decided to be her own
boss early on and took her sav-
ings from her lucrative com-
mercial work and put the money
into her art. The result is an al-
bum that has been written,
produced, performed and or-
chestrated by Ms. Kosins.
Her marketing acumen —
she'll telephone a radio station
and thank them for playing her
CD, a personal-touch gesture
that can turn the record's play
from light to medium rotation —
was learned from her father.
"I learned a lot about mar-
keting and sales and taking con-
trol from my dad," she said.
She also had her first brush
with musical greats through her
father, who outfitted many of
Motown's recording artists.
"I remember one time, we were
at a show and Lou Rawls came
by and hugged my dad and asked
him to be his manager," she said.
Her father, who died of a
heart attack in 1990, also in-
spired "Your Smile," one of the
tunes on the record. Strolling on
the California beach while visit-
ing one of her two brothers, and
reflecting on familial ties, the
song came to her in less than 30
minutes.
Her newest recognition has al-
ready translated into gigs, locally
and around the country. She'll
be at New York's famous jazz
club The Blue Note in December
and is booked for performances
in and around Michigan.
"It would really be a dream
come true if the record had a
lot of success," she said. "I
hope I can leave my mark as an
artist." ❑
