costly membership fees which
preclude some Jews from getting
involved. They said the welcome
mat to Jewish institutions is not
welcoming enough. Intermarried
couples must be treated as valu-
able members of temples and
shuls ifJudaism is to survive into
the 21st century.
And many Jews who define
themselves as Jews don't affili-
ate because they don't believe in
God. It's for this reason that Hu-
manistic groups — like the Birm-
ingham Temple — ought not be
shunned, as they have been, but
rather embraced as an option for
Jews who might otherwise be
lost.
Writer Anne Roiphe delivered
a speech Saturday afternoon that
cut to the quick for Henrietta
Wexler and Mary Perica, mem-
bers of Machar, the Humanistic
congregation in Washington,
D.C.
Ms. Roiphe told of her broth-
er, who disavowed his formerly
strong Jewish connection after
he contracted AIDS while con-
ducting medical research. He im-
plored his family to utter no men-
tion of God at the funeral. He
wanted silence.
Reflecting on the speech, Ms.
Wexler said that silence paral-
lels the void she believes exists
for the unaffiliated Jew.
"You have to fill the silence
with something," she said. "If you
ask unaffiliated Jews, most
would say they would like to find
something. People are always
seeking solace; it's just that they
don't always find it in tradition-
al Jewish institutions."
Speaker Bernard Reisman, a
professor at Brandeis Universi-
ty, said all Jews are in exile un-
til they begin making progress
toward solving the problem of the
unaffiliated Jew.
"Jews are not content with the
status quo," he said. "We are not
content until our sacred ideas for
a just and responsible society are
fulfilled. I don't think you can be
a good Jew alone. I think you
must be with other Jews."

The decision was based on a few
factors. First, the Hebrew school's
population has grown over the past
three years from more than 150 to
about 200. The parents of those
students and others also have in-
quired about a possible nursery
school or day-care facility.
Second, a 1991 study compiled
by APB Associates for the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan De-
troit indicated that the highest
density of Jews is in the back yard
of Beth Shalom.
`The only section of the present-
day core which approaches the
Jewish density of 40 years ago (in
the Dexter-Davison neighborhood)
is north Oak Park, the square mile
between 10 and 11 Mile roads,
Coolidge and Greenfield," the
study said.
And, third, Federation's Neigh-
borhood Project has helped 825
families to purchase homes in Oak
Park and Southfield through an
incentive loan program, stren gth-
ening the Jewish population.
'We are located in Oak Park for
the long haul," Rabbi David Nel-
son told congregants in his an-
nouncement to them on Kol Nidre.
"Others chose to leave or circum-
stances forced them to do so, but
we believe that a Conservative
congregation is needed in north
Oak Park."
"We are here and we intend to
stay," he said.
The synagogue, built in two
stages in the mid-1950s, has un-
dergone minor changes in the
past, including the remodeling of
the main sanctuary, addition of
air conditioning units and other
cosmetic revisions. The new plan
