BETH SHALOM

would be Beth Shalom's first ma-
jor renovation.
The plans were formulated last
year after two task forces met and
went over the building's and con-
gregation's projected future needs.
A strategy was mapped out to re-
/ vamp the front and west en-
trances to make them airy and
pleasant; to strip the social hall of
its dark paneling and add an ad-
jacent garden to be used for small
weddings; to change the parking
lot's traffic plan; and to add a wing
to the east side of the building that
would boost the number of class-
rooms from three in the original
building to a total of 17.
The biggest part of the under-
taking will be the expansion of the
school. In the past, the Hebrew
students have used Avery School
across Lincoln from Beth Shalom.
"The Berkley School District
has always been there for us. They
have been extremely cooperative,"
said Sy Finkelstein, Beth
Shalom's immediate past presi-
dent. "Perhaps that is why we
have become complacent about
having our own facility."
But because of their own ren-
ovation plans, the district has had
to move some of Beth Shalom's
classes to nearby Norup Middle
School In addition, Avery has had
to retain more of its rooms for
latch-key and other after-school
programs, leaving fewer rooms to
spare.
Beth Shalom's new classrooms
will be used to house the Hebrew
students at night and the nursery
school and a day-care center dur-
ing the day, thus eliminating the
rental costs paid to the Berkley dis-
trict. Although the number of class-
rooms rented has changed from
semester to semester, the situa-
tion has always come at a price:
$10,119 in rental fees last year, a
spokesperson for the district said.
"We realize that the key to a
thriving congregation is in young
families," Mr. Langer said. "We
have to provide for their needs and
that means a nursery school."
The social hall will be the ma-
jor focus of the renovations. Now
outfitted with dark paneling and
brown carpeting, the hall will fea-
ture light wall coverings and up-
dated lighting. The doors leading
to the back parking lot will open
to a veranda surrounded by a gar-
den.
The cost of the construction and
renovation is expected to be ap-
proximately $1.5 million. The rest
of the funds raised will set up the
congregation's first endowment
fund to be used to offset any in-
crease in operating costs and to
provide scholarship funds for the
anticipated growth in school en-
rollment.
But none of the construction or
renovation plans will commence
until the first $1 million in pledges
> have been signed and approval for
the project has been secured from
the city, possibly as early as spring
1996. ❑
