Rabbi Reuven Hammer
is the Conservative
Movement's Scholar-in-
Residence. He received
his ordination from the
Jewish Theological
Seminary and a Ph.D. in
Special Education from
Northwestern University.
He is a prolific writer whose recent works
include Entering Jewish Prayer, A Guide to
Personal Devotion and the Worship Service.
He has a personal commitment to sharing
Jewish life with all Jews regardless of ability.
The program is sponsored by the Michigan
Board of Rabbis in cooperation with The
Jewish News and the Community Outreach
and Involvement Department of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.
NEAL SCHINDLER of Hunt-
ington Woods has been selected
to attend the National Young
Leaders Conference in Washing-
ton, D.C. Mr. Schindler is a ju-
nior at Berkley Senior High
School.
The Michigan Renaissance Fes-
tival selected MIKE COOPER
for its first annual $500 college
scholarship for a Novice Acade-
my performer. Mr. Cooper is a se-
nior at the Roeper High School.
SHELLY MOSS BROOKS,
professor of early childhood de-
velopment at Oakland Commu-
nity College, has been honored
with the Trends Award as Out-
standing Educator of the year. In
addition to her professorship, Ms.
Brooks also provided quality child
care to children of Oakland Coun-
ty at Bloomfield Nursery School
and Shelly's Place from 1969 to
1994.
SUSAN GARTENBERG, Con-
gregation Shaarey Zedek Beth
Hayeled teacher, West Bloom-
field, is a recipient of Metro-Par-
ents Magazine outstanding
teacher Golden Apple Award in
1995.

LEONARD GURWIN was re-
cently honored as a 50-year mem-
ber in good standing at the
Michigan State Bar meeting in
Lansing. Besides being a prac-
ticing attorney, Mr. Gurwin was
instrumental in organizing the
first B'nai B'rith Israel Lodge and
becoming its first president. He
is also a member of the Masonic
Mosaic Lodge and a 40-year
jmember of Congregation B'nai
David.
