Norman's Eton Street Station
Is On The Right Dining Track

DANNY RASKIN LOCAL COLUMNIST

W

arm feelings of another

era are evoked by the
polished brass and
wood accents, art deco
wall ornaments and light fixtures
and turn-of-the-century carpet-
ing, wallpaper and mirrors.
Norman's Eton Street Station
is a classically restored train sta-
tion-turned-restaurant that
brings together the best of many
worlds in dining.
Good food, fine service, rea-
sonable prices, enchantingly
beautiful atmosphere and much
experience restaurant know-how
by owners and operators Bonnie
and Norm LePage.
The former Birmingham train
station was built in 1931, and
was an empty, heavily vandal-
ized hulk for 20 years after clos-
ing in the '50s.
When Bonnie and Norm
bought the place in 1982, there
were weeds, graffiti, bats, broken
windows, and people sleeping in
it ... A national and local histori-
cal building that was left to ne-
glect.
But the restaurateur wife and
husband saw something ... And
after two years of renovating, it
opened in May, 1984, to become
one of the area's most success-
ful restaurant operations.
One section of the restaurant,
that at another time had been the
station's ladies and mens rooms,
is now a dining sector seating 40
... A former upstairs luggage room
was converted into a balcony
seating 58 ... The downstairs tun-
nel area where trains still go over
the top is a party room seating
35.
Some of the original walls are
two-feet thick ... The main dining
room is the former Birmingham
railroad station's one-time grand
hall.
In it is a hand-made-from-ma-
hogany bar with a turn-of-the-
century design ... standing atop
the original terrazzo floor (with
repairs) ... The 10,000-square-foot
Albert Kahn-designed edifice to-
day would be hard to replace ...
Even the original walls and slate
roof are still there.
Four 10-foot plants with petri-
fied coconut palms are inside the
bar area ... Six petrified banana
palms are also set around in a
splendid array of elegant decor.
Some time next June or July,
Norman's Eton Street Station
will serve its three millionth cus-
tomer ... with plans ahead for a
gala celebration.

For lovers of homemade meat-
loaf, Norman's Eton Street is a
big treat ... made fresh every day
in big, long pans...with ground
tenderloin, ground veal, red and
green peppers, onions, celery, car-
rots, spices and seasonings ... and
its own homemade gravy.
Also the old-fashioned way of
mashed potatoes ... mushed in a
huge hand masher.
And on with the new ... Nor-
man's Eton Street Station's most
popular seller ... the planked
whitefish ... Bonnie and Norm sell
so much white fish that they will
soon have a complete white fish
section in their menu.
Potato encrusted whitefish on
a bed of pistachios ... Genoblaise,
lemon sauce with capers sprin-
kled on top ... Blackened with a
tomato basil cream sauce ...
Sauteed with crushed hazel-
nuts...Standard broiled, baked or
meuniere ... All served with sweet

en pasta, sandwiches, chicken
breast, etc.
The filets, salmon and many
other items are cut by the Nor-
man's Eton Street Station staff
Nothing is frozen ... everything
fresh ... It even makes its own
bread and rolls ... the homemade
strudel, apple cinnamon pie and
pecan cannel nut pie ... And also
has its own smoker (for turkey,
chicken, etc.).
The Sunday Brunch, 10:30 to
2:30, in the main room, is an all-
you-can-eat buffet people are
talking about ...Custom-made
omelet stations, carved roast beef
and turkey, pastas, chickens, sal-
ads, fresh fruits, eggs Benedict,
breakfast and brunch meats,
scrambled eggs, smoked fish,
bagels, etc. ... $13.95 adults ...

$7.95 kids under 10 ... Free un-

der 5 years old.

It is big on special events like
