ILLER PHOTOGRAPH Y FIRM STAND page 21 can compensate for the loss in federal dollars and, although JFA residents have been told they will not be forced out onto the streets, concerns among many of the aged abound. In recent months, Ms. Mantel, Ms. Goldstein, Ms. Adaskin and their JFA neighbors have lobbied against reducing HUD subsidies. They have written letters and last month five seniors with two JFA staff members took a tip to Lansing to participate in Public Policy Day. Sponsored by the Michigan Association of Homes and Ser- vices for the Aging, the forum dis- cussed the seniors' dilemma and allowed them to express their views. Representatives of JFA at Public Policy Day included resi- dents Faye Bloom, Hy Schecter, Iry Adelman, Sylvia Foxman, Ellen Magar and staff members Donna Weinstein and Abu Ra- madan. "This is a shtetl and these folks are very politically involved," says Ms. Friedman. "These are not passive older people." 0 Aid Sought For St. Thomas The Jewish Federation is ac- cepting financial contributions to aid Hurricane Marilyn victims of St. Thomas in the Virgin Islands. Donations should be made out to "Hurricane Relief: Virgin Is- lands" and sent to the attention of D.J. Kucharski of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan De- troit. All contributions will be for- warded by the Jewish Federation to the Council of Jewish Federa- tions (CJF), which is coordinat- ing the relief efforts. About 80 percent of the homes on the island were either de- stroyed or damaged. More than half of the island's residents, in- cluding 400 Jewish families, are now homeless. The island's 200-year-old Unit- ed Hebrew Synagogue, believed to be the oldest synagogue in con- tinuous use under the U.S. flag, was not destroyed. However, its religious school was badly dam- aged and its social hall was de- stroyed. Recently, the CJF sent med- ical supplies, electrical genera- tors and non-perishable food items to aid in the relief efforts. Plans are under way to provide additional supplies, counseling by social workers and financial assistance loans to individuals. For details, call D.J. Kuchars- ki at the Jewish Federation, (810) 642-4260. (:\
