peutic potential.
But that hardly disturbs a psy-
chiatrist like Dr. Bloom. On the
contrary, he's actually inspired
by it.
"Should the artist pander to
the public or the perceived pop-
ular trend? Or, should he or she
do what he or she is eternally
compelled to do?" These are ques-
tions Dr. Bloom concedes also
could be placed within the con-
text of an individual's life.
Utility and aesthetic value sel-
dom travel the same course.
After all, during his life, Van
Gogh was known as the man who
reasoned that, since he had two
ears, he could afford chopping one
off. Although today his seizures
might be diagnosed as an epilep-
tic condition, his vibrant colors
and intense canvases testify to
the brilliant cathartic outpour-
ing of what he mined along his
exploration into the mysterious
unconsciousness.
For Van Gogh, art and thera-
py were inseparable. Just look at
what he created under insuffer-
able personal physical circum-
stances. That's why Dr. Bloom,
for one, believes that psy-
chotherapy and free-association
can be used to heal the deeply
disturbed as well as the over-
stressed.
"The vast majority of artists
are not identified as such," he
said. "They might not make a liv-
ing at it, but it's in their soul to
do."
