• Despite deadly civil war, treacherous roads, and hundreds of armed checkpoints, JDC's relief efforts have continued. Many tons of food, clothing and medicine have been provided to suffering civilians throughout the former Yugoslavia. Aid donated by European governments and international relief agencies, including Moslem and Christian organizations, has been delivered through the JDC - La Benevolencia lifeline into Sarajevo. In fact, throughout the crisis, JDC has supplied La Benevolencia with medicines and operates free pharmacies in Sarajevo, which have provided up to half of all the pharmaceuticals available in the city. Bosnian refugees of all faiths and ethnic origins are now being assisted, many for a second time since World War II. Sick, frightened and anxious about tomorrow, they depend on the generosity of the international community for their survival. In turn, the Jewish Coalition for Bosnian Relief depends on you. In this season of reflection and renewal, let us reach into our collective memory and reach out to these people. As over 30 Jewish organizations join together for a common cause, we urge you to support our efforts. Your assistance can mean the difference between life and death. Facts about the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee Founded in 1914, in recent years the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee, with the help of the Jewish people, has mounted major non-sectarian relief efforts throughout the world, including Armenia, Colombia, El Salvador, Ethiopia, Jamaica, Kurdistan, Lebanon, Mexico, Rwanda, Somalia, and Zimbabwe. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee has responded to disasters and has carried out long-term development projects in Africa, South America, Europe and Asia. Hundreds of thousands of people continue to suffer in the former Yugoslavia. Families seek warm shelter as another harsh winter approaches. In war-torn Bosnia there is devastation and hopelessness. Our history and tradition require that we not ignore the desperate cries for help from those suffering in the former Yugoslavia. Although headlines may change, the human suffering continues. In response to these tragic events in Bosnia, over 30 national Jewish organizations have come together to create the Jewish Coalition for Bosnian Relief. The Coalition has launched an effort to provide desperately needed food, medicine, shelter, clothing and other humanitarian assistance to those suffering from the conflict in the former Yugoslavia. These projects will be administered by the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee (JDC). Since the beginning of the devastation in the former Yugoslavia, JDC has been in the forefront of the effort to supply humanitarian aid, delivering assistance without regard to race, religion or political affiliation. Working with La Benevolencia, the one hundred year-old Jewish welfare society of Sarajevo, JDC evacuated over 2,100 Moslem, Christian, and Jewish women, children, and elderly from Sarajevo during the heart of the siege.
