professionals and rabbis to on-
going research.
Dr. Weiss advised all women
to perform monthly breast self-
examinations, and for women
age 50 and over, to get regular
mammograms. Women with
family histories of cancer should
take the extra precaution of con-
sulting their doctors.
Furthermore, Ashkenazic
women should keep up with new
studies on the 185delAG muta-
tion, she said. Some women
might consider genetic counsel-
ing, which maps out a family's
medical history to provide infor-
mation on an individual's risk of
developing the disease.
Genetic counselors might also
recommend preventative mea-
sures like healthier diets. Some
women have even opted for pre-
cancer mastectomies, which
might reduce (but not eliminate)
the risk of breast cancer.
Anne Greb, a genetic counselor
from the Center for Molecular
Medicine and Genetics at WSU's
School of Medicine, says the is-
sue raises a number of questions.
In particular: If there is a posi-
tive correlation between 185de-
lAG and cancer, will carriers be
discriminated against in the
workplace or by health insurance
companies?
The NIH study was carried
out by Jeffery Struewing, Dvo-
rah Abeliovich, Tamar Peretz,
Naaman Avishai, Michael
Kaback, Francis Collins and
Lawrence Brody. For more in-
