sonic cleaner for five minutes.
Then they are scrubbed.
Afterwards, they are packaged
and placed in an autoclave or a
chemiclave. The autoclave cleans
with a combination of heat, pres-
sure and steam at a temperature
of 250 degrees for 30 minutes.
The chemiclave uses chemical
vapors for the same amount of
time.
All dentists are required to
comply with OSHA (Occupa-
tional Safety Health Act) stan-
dards for sterilization. This is
regulated with monthly tests of
the sterilization equipment.
Dr. Theodore Golden, Fa-
cial Plastic Surgery
Question: I'm in my early
40s. Is that too young to have fa-
cial plastic surgery?
Answer: There is no special
age at which you are a candidate
for facial plastic surgery. The is-
sue is not your age, but rather
your individual characteristics
and aging process. I have done
facial surgery on women in their
early 30s and I've said no to
women in their 50s. The main
question is: Will you benefit from
the surgery? This can only be de-
termined by a consultation with
your plastic surgeon.

erinarian
Question: Why is my pet itch-
ing?
Answer: The most common
cause of itching in dogs and cats
is skin allergies, primarily caused
by fleas. A flea is a hearty para-
site that lives by sucking blood
from animals like dogs and cats.
Smaller "pocket pets" are also
susceptible.
It is flea saliva that causes
your pets to scratch, itch or bite
— predominantly at their back
ends. Owners should check their
pets for fleas, as well as flea eggs,
which also hide in carpets and
baseboards. Search your pet for
the flea's calling card — a brown-
ish black speck, not unlike dirt.
That's flea excrement, a telltale
sign of problems.
See your veterinarian to
determine the cause of your
pet's itching. The vet will try
to diagnose an allergy and es-
tablish a flea control regimen.
Also, ask about some of the new
pet products available, includ-
ing a monthly flea-prevention
pill.
Dr. Mark Kohn, General
Dentistry
Question: How do I know
that my dentist sterilizes the in-
struments correctly?
Answer: A dentist ought to be
more than happy to go over the
exact sterilization procedures
used in his or her office. Two of
these employ ultrasonic and
chemiclave equipment. After
each use, all dentistry instru-
ments are placed into an ultra-

In pondering why so many
Jewish women develop breast
cancer, scientists and doctors
have considered everything from
unhealthy diets to the educa-
tional ambitions of Jewish
women who delay marriage and
pregnancy to achieve success in
the professional world.
Both explanations might hold
water. High fat consumption
seems to increase the risk, and re-
search demonstrates that women
who don't have babies before age
30 face a greater chance of being
diagnosed with the disease.
What research hasn't proven
yet is whether the underlying as-
sumption is correct. Percentage-
wise, are Jews really more
afflicted by breast cancer than
gentile women?
