among the strikers is their em-
barrassment at having to ask for
assistance, she said.
"It was really tough to come
here. It's not easy for anyone, but
these are people who've worked
for the Free Press and News for
many years, never asked for as-
sistance and felt a real hesitation
to ask for help."
Yad Ezra, which was estab-
lished five years ago, supplies
clients with kosher food, basing
the amount distributed on the size
of their families.

To be eligible for the monthly
food supplements, clients must
show that their income is either
near or below the state poverty
line or they've run into a cata-
strophe that has crippled their
earning ability.
The food is nutritionally bal-
anced: Packages include fruits,
vegetables, chicken, eggs, cereal,
matzah and matzah meal and dry
milk if it's available. A family of
two receives roughly 40 pounds
of food per month.
The organization, which is
funded through private donations,
serves Jews exclusively; non-Jews
who have inquired about getting
food — including strikers — are
directed to other resources, Ms.
Goldman said.
The need has steadily in-
creased, Ms. Goldman said. In its
first year, Yad Ezra serviced
about 200 families each month,
distributing over 100,000 pounds
of food; this year, the number has
soared to 1,000 families per
month. Yad Ezra expects to dis-
tribute roughly a half-million
pounds of food in 1995.
"We have a significant number
of new Americans, but we have
people whose businesses have
failed, young single mothers, the
working poor, the handicapped,"
she said. "The community has
been very generous and donations
> continue to increase. However,
the need for service grows at a
faster pace than the percentage
increase of donations."
Most clients pick up food at the
Yad Ezra office, but the organi-
zation will deliver to the home-
bound as well. EJ
