Clara Collens, Devoted Volunteer

Clara Collens, 94, of Southfield, died Sept. 25.
In 1914, Mrs. Collens was admitted to the Juil-
hard School of Music and received her teacher's
degree and graduate degree from that school.
In 1928, she joined the Conduc-
torless Orchestra, which was
formed from members of the old
Russian Symphony Orchestra.
In the Detroit area, Mrs. Col-
lens worked as a teacher of
English as a second language at
the Jewish Community Center.
In addition, she taught Soviet
immigrants who were physi-
cians in the former USSR and
who needed a better command
of English to pass medical and
English exams to practice in
this country.
Mrs. Collens did volunteer
work for the Greater Detroit
Society for the Blind and served
as president of the Residents'
Council at the Franikin Club
Apartments. In 1989, Mrs. Col-
lens won the Detroit Heritage
Clara Collens
"Golden Oldie" Award.
Her other memberships and
affiliations included the Business and Profes-
sional Section of the Women's Division of Fed-
eration, Hadassah, National Council of Jewish

67, of Troy, died Oct. 2. Mr.
Alpern was an architect and
owner of Robert B. Alpern As-
sociates in Birmingham. Mr.
Alpern earned his bachelor of
arts in architecture at the Uni-
versity of Michigan.
He was the past president of
the Detroit Chapter of the
American Institute of Archi-
tects, past director of the Michi-
gan Institute of Architects, was
the design architect for the
Somerset Apartments in Troy
and the Berkshire Hotel in
Southfield as well as many oth-
er commerical and residential
projects. Mr. Alpern was also a
member of the Founders Soci-
ety DIA and a very active
bridge player.
Mr. Alpern is survived by his
wife, Zoe; son, Jamie B. of Oak
Park; daughter, Chris T. of
Southfield; sisters and brother-
in-law, Marise and Jerome
Levy of Franklin, Shirley
Young of Bloomfield Hills. In-
terment at Beth El Memorial

SAMUEL CHARFOOS, 87,
former Detroiter of Boynton
Beach, Fla., died Sept. 11. Mr.
Charfoos graduated from De-
troit College of Law in 1928.
During 50 years of practice, he
specialized in representing in-
jured workers.
Mr. Charfoos was one of the
founders of the American Trial
Lawyers Association and of the
Michigan Trial Lawyers Associ-
ation; he was poresident of the
latter for its first five years. Mr.
Charfoos founded the personal
injury law firm of Charfoos and
Christensen.
He is survived by his beloved
wife of 63 years, Charlotte; sons
and daughter-in-law,

Lawrence, Myron and Roberta;
grandchildren, Deborah and
Hamid Banooni, Sandra Char-
foos; great-grandchildren,
David and Dustin; brother,
Herbert. Interment in Florida.

SHIRLEY COHEN, 85, of Oak

Park, died Sept. 25. Mrs. Cohen
was the beloved wife of the late
Solomon Cohen. She is sur-
