BEAN SCENE

the defunct Mount Royal Hotel
on Woodward, near the old Tem-
ple Beth El.
Southfield attorney Lori Jacobs
got her first big break there, when
she was tapped to open for a fa-
mous bossa nova guitarist who
packed the house for every per-
formance. Before that, she'd show
up for open-mike nights.
Ms. Jacobs went on to make
two record albums and tour the
country as a singer-songwriter.
Mr. Coden, who is preparing
for a Raven reunion in Novem-
ber, said the Raven, the Gallery
and the Retort were unquestion-
ably the top three performance
coffeehouses in the city.
And the reason people of all
ages hang out at coffeehouses
hasn't changed through the
years, it seems.
"For people on first dates, this
seems like a good start, where
there's no alcohol and it's not a
big deal like going to dinner," said
Ryan Haberek of Eastpointe.
"The Raven Gallery, especial-
ly, was great for a first date," Mr.
Coden said. "You could pick up a
girl and you really had to worry
only about the conversation on
the way to the Raven. It gave the
impression of going to a night-
club, even if you weren't old
enough."
