Costa Rica
Jews Split

San Jose, Costa Rica (JTA) — Af-
ter a passionate debate on the re-
ligious affiliation of Costa Rica's
Jewish community, local leaders
have decided to remain Ortho-
dox.
But at an unprecedented "com-
munity congress," 150 commu:
nity members also agreed to
'listen to experts on Conservative
Judaism. In addition, they voted
t o open official communications
. with the country's nascent Re-
form and Chabad Lubavitch con-
gregations.
Costa Rica's. 2,500 member
Jewish community has long
maintained a staunchly Ortho-
. dox line. However, in recent
years, breakaway Reform and
Chabad congregations have
arisen, the former comprised
mainly of foreign residents and
the latter a small grouping of less
than two dozen families.
The community congress voted
overwhelmingly to invite Con-
servative movement representa-
tives to discuss the viability of
introducing the country's oldest
and largest congregation to that
stream of Judaism, a move sup-
porters said would save the com-
munity from division and
eventual disappearance.

Rabbi Dies, 71

Jerusalem (JTA) — Rabbi Yehu-
da Moir Getz, the rabbi of the
Western Wall for the last 27
- years, died last week after a ma-

old.
Getz was buried on the Mount
of Olives.
After moving from Tunisia to
Israel in 1949, Getz settled in the
Galilee. He served in the army,
rising to the rank of lieutenant
colonel.
After one of his sons, a para-
trooper, was killed in the battle
for Jerusalem during the 1967
Six-Day War, Getz moved to the
Old City and settled in the Jew-
ish Quarter.
Getz established a yeshiva
there, and took up the duties he
held until his death.

Shevardnadze
Welcomes Jews

New York (JTA) — Georgian
President Eduard Shevardnadze
flew to a remote mountainous
town last week for a celebration
of the return to the local Jews of
a synagogue that had been con-
, fiscated by Communist authori-
ties decades before.
At the celebration in the town
of Oni, Shevardnadze joined a 10-
