The Conservative Movement Scholar In Res- idence Program, made possible through the support of the Federation Max M. Fisher Jewish Community Foundation, the Detroit Friends of the Jewish Theo- logical Seminary and the United Syn- agogue of Conservative Judaism, Michigan Region, will stimulate all Jews to actively re-connect to the sources of our tradition: God, Israel and the Torah. This year's Scholar, Rabbi Reuven Hammer, received his rabbinic ordi- nation and a doctorate from the Jewish Theological Seminary. He also has a Ph.D. in Special Education from North- western University. After serving as a chaplain in the U.S. Air Force and as a congregational rabbi in Chicago for 15 years, he and his wife made al iyah in 1973. They now live in Jerusalem, where Rabbi Hammer has served as Dean of the Jewish Theological Semi- nary's Jerusalem Campus and was the founding Director of the Beit Midrash, the Seminary of Judaic Studies. He cur- rently is the Av Beit Din L'Glyur, Pres- ident of the Conservative Movement Religious Court. THE DE TRO IT JEW Rabbi Hammer is a prolific writer with three new books released just within the past twelve months: Entering Jew- ish Prayer, A Guide to Personal Devo- tion and the Worship Service; The Classic Midrash: Tannaltic Commen- taries on the Bible; and The Jerusalem Anthology: A Literary Guide. He is also active in working with special needs children, addressing their spiritual re- quirements. Rabbi Hammer combines a depth of Judaic knowledge with a per- sonal commitment to sharing Jewish life with all Jews regardless of ability. 48 • .
