seen as a faith community. But
surely we want to make room for
those who want to be faithful
even if their faith is wanting.
(Elsewhere, I've argued that
what Judaism seeks of us is not
a leap of faith, but a leap of love
— as in, v'ahaVta ... "and you
shall love the Lord your God ...")
Is it not possible to experience the
world as holy even if one remains
devoutly agnostic?
My father taught me that
there's an important difference
between the epikoires and the am
ha'aretz, between the heretic and
the ignoramus. Where the spir-
itual quest is lazily Jewish, is sat-
isfied with Jewish "style" but
indifferent to Jewish learning, it
has no claim on our respect. But
the same might as readily be said
of a large number of more "con-
ventional" Jews.
The boundaries that separate
the literal from the mystical, the
palpable from the symbolic, the
ritual from the eclectic, are not
impermeable, nor have they ever
been, else we'd long since have
ossified.
There are always new songs to
be written and sung; some will
capture only the passing mood,
and that's good enough. And
some will last for generations to
come. ❑

Teen Campaign
For Tolerance

Paris (JTA) — A European cam-
paign to promote tolerance end-
ed recently with the convergence
of six "European Youth Trains"
in Strasbourg, France.
. Earlier this month, the Coun-
cil of Europe, which is head-
quartered in Strasbourg,
launched a campaign to combat
racism, xenophobia and anti-
Semitism.
The Council of Europe is an as-
sembly of European parliamen-
tary democracies.
Thousands of youths traveled
across Europe on the trains,
which left from various capital
cities, to promote the campaign,
called "All Different, All Equals."
Each train was assigned a
theme, such as tolerance, soli-
darity or choice.
Officials of the European Jew-
ish Congress headed the train
that left from Paris.
Two exhibitions were shown
aboard the Paris train: 'The Time
of the Roundups," prepared by
the Paris-based Center of Con-
temporary Jewish Archives, and
"Racism Through the Micro-
scope," prepared by the French
League for Permanent Education
and the Paris Museum of Science
and Industry.
