moses died, others would claim a
leadership role (as Korach had
done). With this public transfer
of authority, the legitimacy of
Joshua's leadership could not be
questioned. Moses knew the awe-
some burden he was placing on
Joshua's shoulders: He admon-
ished him, "chazak ve' ematz" —
"be strong and resolute".
Another midrash (in Devarim
Rabbah) suggests that Moses
pleaded with God not to let him
die after all. The rabbis portray
Moses as proposing that Joshua
take over as leader but that he
remain by his side.God agrees,
but when the two men enter the
Tabernacle, a pillar of cloud sep-
arates them. God speaks to
Joshua alone; and afterwards
Moses asks, "What did God say
to you?" Joshua, now the wise
chieftain, replies, "When God
spoke with you, did you inform
me what was said?" Moses is
shocked and realizes the trans-
fer of authority has taken place.
"Better to die a hundred times,"
he says to God, "than to experi-
ence even one moment of jeal-
ousy."
So we learn, too, that a good
leader must know when the time
has come to step down and let a
new generation take its rightful
place at the helm.D

Group At Temple

Temple Israel will begin a nine-
week bereavement support
group on Tuesdays, Oct. 10-Dec.
5, from 7:30-9:30 p.m.
The group, which meets at the
temple, will be led by trained fa-
cilitators. The group is offered
free of charge to any member of
the Jewish community who has
suffered the loss of a loved one.
