grandmother, Sarah Aaronson,
who, until the age of 95, regular-
ly graced the Birmingham Tem-
ple kitchen during the holidays.
"Nana was only four-foot-ten.
We would stand on milk crates to
make gefilte fish together for con-
gregational seders," she recalls.
When Ms. Levin-Gorelick mar-
ried into a "local deli family" over
20 years ago, she learned the com-
mercial end of the business.
But the marriage didn't last.
With a 2-year-old and 6-year-
old to care for, she needed
more flexible work than her
training in geriatric social
work provided. She tutored
bar/bat mitzvah students,
taught Hebrew school and
taught herself calligraphy,
which she could do at home.
In the meantime, Ms.
Levin-Gorelick, who lives
in Bloomfield Hills, contin-
ued to develop her lifelong
interest in Jewish history
and culture, as well as hu-
5y manism.

ment from friends and cur-
husband Stephen.

Just last month, Ms. Levin-
Gorelick and Classic Cuisine part-
ner Jeff Swider catered, with their
staff of five full-time and 50 "re-
servist" waitpeople and bar-
tenders, the Michigan Cancer
Foundation's dedication of the
Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer
Center.
"I encourage my clients to re-
quest selections which truly re-
flect their tastes and styles,"
which could include traditional
Jewish, vegetarian, Middle East-
ern or no-salt, she says.
Ms. Levin-Gorelick, 42, got her
first cooking lessons from her

ingham Temple when members
invited her to become the temple's
social-events coordinator and
kitchen manager in the late
1980s.
Catering privileges at Temple
Kol Ami in West Bloomfield and
Temple Emanu-El in Oak Park
have expanded her sphere of con-
gregational parties, and she is
preparing more of what she calls
"Oneg brunches," which might in-
clude tiny bagels, spreads and
quiches.
Ms. Levin-Gorelick has played
dual roles, officiating at a cere-
mony and catering the celebra-
tion afterward.
