W hatever way we choose to practice our faith, there are certain

times of the year — like the High Holy Days when we need to
be with other Jews.

W hatever our personal circumstances, being part of a congrega-

tion enables us to reach out to other members of our extended
Jewish family — and for them to reach out to us.

Wife Of Terrorist?

> ican journalist who covers Israel
for National Public Radio is at
the center of a controversy.
The Committee for Accuracy
in Middle East Reporting in
America (CAMERA) claims that
Maureen Meehan, an NPR re-
porter, is married to a Palestine
Liberation Organization official.
> NPR denies the allegation.
Meehan, an NPR reporter for
two years, was arrested at a
Palestinian protest outside Ori-
ent House, the Palestine Libera-
tion Organization (PLO)
headquarters in east Jerusalem
on Sept. 9. In a news media ac-
count of the arrest, Meehan was
identified as the husband of Jiries
• Atrash.
Recognizing that there is a
PLO official named Jiries Atrash,
Andrea Levin, president of CAM-
ERA, wrote the president of NPR,
Delano Lewis, and complained:
"If accounts of Meehan's connec-
tion with Jiries Atrash are, in-
deed, accurate, a clear-cut conflict
of interest exists between the
public's right to objective news
about the Arab-Israeli conflict
and Maureen Meehan's position
as the wife of a PLO official."
CAMERA for several years
has criticized NPR for allegedly
slanted coverage against Israel.

Japan To Open
Israel Office

Jerusalem(JTA) — Japanese
Prime Minister Tomiichi Mu-
) rayama visited Israel recently as
/ part of a tour of the Middle East
aimed at increasing Tokyo's role
in the regional peace process.
Murayama, the first Japanese
prime minister to visit the Jew-
ish state, told his Israeli hosts
that his country would open a
trade promotion office in Israel.
The move was welcomed by Is-
) raeli officials, who said it sig-
naled that Japan was no longer
honoring the Arab boycott.
