The Chinese delegation saw so- cial activities for the elderly and judo lessons for children with mental disabilities. The visits to the programs for children with special needs included a day-care center for children with severe physical and mental disabilities and a school that mainstreams autistic children. Watching the children during a physical edu- cation lesson, one of the delegates exclaimed, "I can't figure out which of the children are autis- tic!" The principal was delighted. With notebooks full of what they had seen and learned, the delegation returned to Shanghai to analyze the programs in depth and decide which are most suit- able for them. In the second stage of the joint program, JDC will send experts from Israel to the Hongkou district to help imple- ment and adapt those models that most answer the needs of the lo- cal population. ❑ Hebrew U. DAN GOLDBERG SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS In the early stages of our move- ment, there was a dream about a university. It was a great dream. Dreams are always more beauti- ful than reality, and it was not dif- ficult to dream of the most magnificent 'Temple of Learning.' I dreamed that dream." So said Dr. Chaim Weizmann as the foundation stone of the He- brew University was laid on rugged Mount Scopus in 1918. Little did most of those present realize that this stone was, si- multaneously, a milestone in the building of the state. Seven years later, at the uni- versity's inauguration, its dual ob- jectives were outlined: "To serve as Israel's leading academic in- stitution ... pursuing basic and ap- plied research at the highest level; to serve the Jewish people by pre- serving and expanding the Jew- ish cultural, spiritual and intellectual heritage." Signifi- cantly, among the members of the first board of governors were Al- > bert Einstein and Sigmund Freud — a measure of the academic heights that the founders set out to achieve. In the light of the pariah sta- tus of most Jewish students in Eastern Europe at that time, the establishment of the Hebrew Uni- versity not only opened doors that \ were previously closed to them, • but heralded the beginning of a new epoch in the history of a peo- ple. Equally, it spearheaded the revival of the national language A Very Happy and Healthy New Year to All My Friends and Family.
