Reform Movement
Plans Food Drive

New York (JTA) — With a goal
of collecting 1.5 million pounds of
food for the poor in the United
States, the Reform movement is
launching its annual national
food drive on Rosh Hashanah.
Congregants at Reform tem-
ples across the country will get
empty grocery bags on Rosh
Hashanah and return them filled
on Yom Kippur, Sukkot or Sim-
chat Torah.
Most of the 857 Reform con-
gregations that are members of
the Union of American Hebrew
Congregations are expected to
participate in the movement's
High Holy Day Hunger Project.
Last year, 1 million pounds of
groceries were collected and dis-
tributed to the poor.
In a number of places, gro-
ceries collected during the Reform
Movement's food drive are the
largest single donation that food
distribution centers receive dur-
ing the entire year.
This year's drive will be the
sixth annual effort by the UAHC.

V GIVE TO THE TORCH DRIVE

Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli
convicted of spying for the former
Soviet Union has asked the
Supreme Court to free him for
health reasons.
Chief Justice Aharon Barak
opened the hearing to the media
for the first time, at the request
of 76-year-old Marcus Klingberg.
Mr. Klingberg has served 13
years of an 18-year sentence.
His attorney asked that the re-
mainder of his sentence be com-
muted due to failing health.
The representative for the
state was opposed to the early re-
lease, saying that Mr. Klingberg
could still reveal information that
would be harmful to Israel's se-
