stayed behind, sorting through

lives.
Days later, Dr. Feldenkrais
was on his way to England.
Throughout his journey, and
for many days after his arrival
in his new home, Dr.
Feldenkrais was never without
two suitcases. Garet Newel
writes that, "Moshe didn't know
at the time what the suitcases
contained, but these secret pa-
> pers from the Joliet-Curie labo-
ratory helped to keep the
information concerning experi-
ments with nuclear fission out
of the hands of the Nazis and
made it available to the Allies."
It was while he was in Eng-
land that his knee began acting
up, and Dr. Feldenkrais began
reconsidering the way his body
functioned and moved. He
taught his first class in the new
"Feldenkrais method" in 1944.
In the early 1950s, when Is-
rael was anticipating an Egypt-
ian attack, Moshe Feldenkrais
returned to Israel, where he
served as director of the elec-
> tronics department for the Min-
istry of Defense.
Of course, he never aban-
doned his interest in his new
theory of movement. He contin-
ued its practice in Israel, where
his clients included Prime Min-
ister David Ben-Gurion.
When he was 50, Dr.
Feldenkrais dedicated himself
full time to the method which
now bears his name. By 1975 he
was in the United States, teach-
ing it to Americans. His early
supporters included anthropol-
ogist Margaret Mead and Karl
Pribham, head of the neuropsy-
chology labs at Stanford Uni-
versity.
"He's changing things in the
brain itself so that the patient
can gradually adjust his whole
muscular dysfunction to what
we call a normal image," Pro-
fessor Pribham said in an inter-
view.
Fluent in Russian, Hebrew,
English and French, Dr.
Feldenkrais also held a black
belt in judo and founded the Ju-
jitsu Club of France.
Though Dr. Feldenkrais died
in 1984, his movement contin-
ues with workshops, books,
journals, cassette and video
tapes and a growing list of prac-
titioners, all of whom are will-
ing to testify that Feldenkrais
made them happier, healthier
and more sane — or at least
brought an end to their aches
and pains. El
