He won the Detroit City 14-and-
under Boys Championship Tour-
nament, and the 16-and-over
Junior Tournament. Winton was
on Wayne University's varsity
team from 1931-1935, and was
captain his last year.
Winton was a bomber pilot in-
structor in World War II. After the
war, Winton returned to tennis.
For the past 25 years, he has
been playing serious golf and ten-
nis. He had a three handicap at
Knollwood Country Club, but only
focuses on tennis now because of
a back injury.
Gross started playing tennis at
age 10, after some uncles inter-
ested him in the sport. He plays
almost every day year-round.
He played for Detroit Central
High School's varsity team for
three years. He was captain his
senior year and runner-up in De-
troit's city high school champi-
onship in 1942.
He played on the U.S. Army
team based in Florida. After re-
turning home, Gross played sin-
gles and doubles at Wayne State
University.
Brose plays tennis about four
times a week year-round at the
DTSC.
He played for Detroit Central
High School's team for three years
was runner-up for the city cham-
pionship in 1945.
After the service, Brose played
for Wayne University's team for a
year. Then he transferred to Michi-
gan State.
As a senior and captain of the
MSU team in 1951, Brose won the
Big Ten Tournament at No.1 sin-
gles and No.1 doubles, leading the
team to the Big Ten championship.
Brose also reached the quarter fi-
nals of the NCAA singles tourna-
ment that same year.
Brose had disc surgery a few
years ago, which has slowed down
his competitiveness and play in
USTA tournaments.
Singer started playing tennis at
age 32, when he moved to Oak
Park from New York. He took up
tennis in place of handball because
it was a recreational sport he could
share with his family.

are secondary to my quality of life,
and the sport has helped my over-
all physical fitness."
"Tennis has been a very large
part of my life, and through it, I
have formed most of my personal
friendships," Gross said. "I now
have tennis players to call on for a
game almost anywhere in the
country."
"The DTSC is my home away
from home," said Brose. "Anyone
who wants to find highly compet-
itive tennis can play there. The
sport is a great conditioner and re-
ally keeps me in shape."
