Al Gross, Frank Winton, Len Brose and Jerry Singer
In July, Winton won the Inch-
ana Open Senior Tournament. He
is now playing in the National
Clay Court Tournament in Ar-
lington, Va.
Gross, 71, a Farmington Hills
resident and-retired real estate
broker, has been a member of the
DTSC for 47 years. He was one of
the original members.
In 1992, Gross took an instruc-
tion course from tennis pro Den-
nis Van Dermer. Gross is now
rated as an instructor in the Unit-
ed States Professionals Tennis
Registry. He teaches tennis part
time at the DTSC and is also its
assistant manager.
For the past five years, Gross
has directed the clay-court Super
Seniors Tennis Tournament at the
DTSC for the Western Section of
the USTA. In June, 124 players
from 10 states participated.
The tournament is sponsored
by Ira Silver, of Silver's Inc., who
is another member of the club.
USTA members between the ages
of 55-80 were eligible to play. Gross
was a runner-up in the age 70 di-
vision.
Last year, Gross was ranked
first in the Western Section in 70-
and-over. He was also ranked No.
27 nationally.
This past summer, Gross won
35-60. At age 50, he was ranked
fifth in the nation and at age 55
was ranked sixth.
Brose won two national clay-
court USTA doubles titles in 1977
and 1980. Last month, he was run-
ner-up in the 65-and-over catego-
ry in a USTA singles tournament
in Dayton.
Singer, 57, a resident of Farm-
ington Hills and a plumbing con-
tractor, has been a member of the
DTSC for eight years.
He is ranked second in his age
bracket in SEMTA and ninth in
UTSA Western Division.
Singer lost in the semifinals of
his age group in the USTA Silver's
Super Senior Tennis Tournament
at the DTSC in June. In August,
he won a USTA doubles clay-court
championship in Canton, Ohio.
Earlier this year, Singer also
won a singles USTA hard-court in-
doors tournament at Canton.
THE SKINNIES: Winton sticks to sin-
gles and rarely plays doubles. He
plays four times a week year-
round at the DTSC.
At age 7, Winton became inter-
ested in tennis after watching his
older brother play for a California
high school team. Winton was on
Detroit Central High School's var-
sity tennis team from 1927-1931
and ca • taro the last two ears.
