SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

The tragic bombing in Argentina
in July 1994 unearthed a grow-
ing problem in the Argentinian
Jewish community — that of
widespread assimilation and loss
of Jewish identity.
"The explosion didn't create a
new crisis," says Shlomo Gravetz,
head of the World Zionist Orga-
nization's Youth and Hehalutz
Department. "It was a vehicle
through which we were exposed
to an old crisis."

joint tourism ventures between
the two countries. Much of the
traffic is in one direction for now,
with as many as 20,000 Israelis,
both Jews and Arabs, expected
to visit Jordan in 1995.
Meanwhile, an increasing'

extending their trips to Jordan- .

A Tapuz participant plants a tree in
memory of the bombing victims.

A meeting between Mr.
Gravetz, WZO/Jewish Agency
representative Yehiel Leket,
Keren Hayesod Chairman Shlo-
mo Hillel and Jewish communi-
ty leaders shortly after the
bombing confirmed fears that the
community has gradually been
disassociating itself from Israel, •
believing it could "reconcile a sub- •
stantial Jewish communal life
with communal life in Argenti-
na."
In order to counteract this'
growing trend, the WZO/Jewish '
Agency, Keren Hayesod, the'
Joint Distribution Committee'
and other bodies decided to in
vest $4 million in joint projects'
with the Argentinian Jewish
community. Approximately $1.5
million will go toward bringing'
Jewish youth to Israel, an addi-
tional $1 million will be invested
in promoting aliyah, over $1 mil- •
lion will be spent on training'
teachers and purchasing teach-
ing aids, and $300,000 will go to
informational activities and fos-
tering young leadership.
