make offshore Israel their home
are the Mediterranean bot-
tlenose dolphin, which account-
ed for 69 percent of the sightings,
and the common dolphin and
striped dolphin. The identifica-
tions are based on the fishermen's
descriptions.
The dolphin is not entirely a
stranger to Israel's shores. The
pictures of dolphins decorating
mosaic floors uncovered in ar-
chaeological excavation in a tomb
at Beit Shean and in a building

son. The increased activity of
large vessels off the northern
coast of Israel may offer anoth-
er explanation.
In the past year, the marine in-
vestigators have come across 13
dolphins that were either dead or
that died soon after being found
injured on or close to shore. Sev-
en more were found dead in fish-
ing nets. This number, they said,
is particularly high relative to the
50 stranded dolphins reported off
the coast of Israel in more than
40 years preceding the present
survey.
The researchers want to know
whether this increase is due more
to public awareness and scientif-
ic interest in recent years, or to
pollution or natural factors. LI
