Sinai and to Africa. Today, this
has become a very popular
tourist venue for nature lovers,
campers and snorklers — espe-
cially young people from all over
the world.
The 1994 peace treaty signed
with Jordan opened the road to
Jordan as well. Once again the
city of Eilat has become the gate-
way to distant lands, as it was
3,000 years ago when King
Solomon's fleet plied the Gulf of
Aqaba and the Red Sea.
The first Book of ffings tells us
that Solomon imported myrrh
and frankincense through the
port of Eilat. Heavily laden
camels would make the long trek
from Eilat to the royal court in
Jerusalem, a route also taken by
the fabled Queen of Sheba.
It was here that the weary
tenth Roman Legion was posted
after fierce fighting against the
Jewish revolt led by Bar Koch-
ba, in the year 135 CE. There are
also references to Eilat in the Ko-
ran and a number of Arab leg-
ends about the town and its
Jewish inhabitants. The Cru-
saders, who were greatly im-
pressed by the corals and the
multicolored fish, wrested the
town away from the Muslims.

With the fall of the Crusader
kingdom, however, the city was
destroyed in the 13th century; a
new city Aqaba — initially called
Aqaba-Eilat — was set up a lit-
tle distance away.
Eilat disappeared from the
maps. Centuries later, Turkish
authorities set up a police station
there; it served as a nucleus for
a small settlement. The U.N.
partition plan (1947) put Eilat
firmly inside Israel; and follow-
ing a fierce fight to implement
that decision, the Israeli flag flew
over the police station on March
10, 1949. The city grew from 500
inhabitants in 1951 to 10 times
as many in 1959. The 1993 offi-
cial figures stood at 33,000.
Eilat became Israel's winter
resort, attracting foreign tourists
in great numbers. Eilat's 30 ho-
tels offer 5,000 rooms; 2,500 more
are planned before the year 2000.
Israel's number one "sunshine
city" intends to make the most of
peace. A promenade bordering
the entire bay leading from Taba
in Egypt to Aqaba in Jordan, a
race track for Arabian horses,
and a host of sports events (in-
cluding great surfing and sail-
ing) should turn King Solomon's
ancient port into the tourism cap-
ital of the Middle East. C]
