raeli counterparts need to rethink
their uneasy relationship for a
new era in which accommodation
with the Arabs will be an ongo-
ing process, complete with furi-
ous debate in Israel over just how
much to give and how much to
demand in return.
American Jews have the right
to debate these issues. But there
is a tricky line between debate
and a kind of emotional warfare
that may work in Israel — where
citizens share directly in the con-
sequences of these government
decisions — but be disruptive for
an American Jewish community
where the common ground is
much more abstract.
As members of a minority that
too often has been the target of
the politics of suspicion, Jews in
this country need to consider
carefully whether we want to be
a part of the general descent into
the politics of rage — or whether
we want to work actively to find
a more moderate style of dis-
course for a changing and stress-
ful era. CI

Neo-Nazi
Is Extradited

New York (JTA) — Danish offi-
cials have extradited American
neo-Nazi Gary Lauck to Ger-
many to face charges related to
racist activity.
Mr. Lauck, 41, who was ar-
rested near Copenhagen on
March 20 at the request of Ger-
man authorities, faces five years
in jail in Germany if convicted on
the charges — which include
racial incitement and the distri-
bution of illegal propaganda and
Nazi symbols — lodged against
him.
He was transferred to German
custody after the Danish
Supreme Court upheld the ex-
tradition order and after Danish
/- authorities turned down two sep-
arate attempts by Mr. Lauck to
receive political asylum and hu-
manitarian asylum in Denmark.
A German prosecutor con-
firmed that Mr. Lauck arrived at
Hamburg airport and was trans-
ferred to a custodial prison in the
northern port city.
Mr. Lauck, of Lincoln, Neb.,
heads the National Socialist Ger-
man Workers' Party-Foreign Or-
ganization, which takes its name
from Adolf Hitler's original Nazi
party.
According to German investi-
gators, Mr. Lauck and his pub-
lishing empire, taking advantage
of American free-speech laws,
have been distributing neo-Naz
literature and paraphernalia in
Germany for more than 20 years.
