Stepping Stones
To Judaism

JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER

Now that Pamela Cichon's son
Joshua is old enough to start
kindergarten, she feels it's time
for him to begin his formal Jew-
ish education.
The difficulty, as she sees it,
is Joshua has been given a taste
of both her Judaism and her
husband's Catholicism. "When
we were married, we agreed to
raise our children Jewish," said
Ms. Cichon, who was looking for
a program that would ease
Joshua, 5 1/2, into learning the
customs and traditions of Ju-
daism.
On Sunday, Ms. Cichon and
her son, of Oakland County's
Lyon Township, attended an
open house for Stepping Stones
to a Jewish Me. The two-year
family-education program is de-
signed for children and parents
of interfaith families who are un-
affiliated with a temple or syna-
gogue.

Designed for
children and
parents of
interfaith
families.

Stepping Stones, entering its
fourth year, is a Sunday pro-
gram sponsored by local Reform
and Conservative rabbis and ad-
ministered through the Agency
for Jewish Education. Classes,
which will be held at Adat
Shalom Synagogue this year, be-
gin on Oct. 15 and end in May.
During Stepping Stones' first
three years, it was funded by a
grant, now expired, from the
Jewish Federation of Metropol-
itan Detroit. Previously free, the
program now has a $125 mate-
rials fee for returning students
and a $150 charge for new par-
ticipants.
Cynthia Freund, of South
Lyon, a returnee who took her
children to the Sunday orienta-
tion, is looking forward to the
family's second year in the pro-
gram.
"Coming from a mixed fami-
ly, we felt we needed to make
some decisions," Ms. Freund
said. "This seemed like an op-
portune time to mix with other
families and explore our options.
One of the reasons I like the pro-
gram is because my children (6
and 10) are taught at their own
levels." ❑

The Art of Dry Cleaning:

Dry cleaning is the use of non-water based
(hence dry) liquids to remove soil and stains
from fabrics. All dry cleaners have access to
the same liquids but not all are as skillful in
their use. Like a master artist's skill with his
paints, we at MY Cleaners are more skilled
and achieve masterful results in dry cleaning.

One of the many reasons why knowledgeable
customers say "MY Cleaners is my cleaners."
