Obituaries

Dr. Herbert Bloom

Dr. Herbert J. Bloom, 83, of West Bloomfield,
died Sept. 11. Dr. Bloom received his doctor
of dental surgery degree in Ann Arbor in 1935.
He also received his master of science and doc-
tor of philosophy degrees at the University of
Michigan.
The dental section of the U-
M Health Service was built un-
der his direction and he was its
first director. Dr. Bloom be-
came the chief of the Divison
of Oral Surgery at Mount
Carmel Mercy Hospital in 1944
and started the graduate train-
ing program there. In 1949, he
became chief of the Divison of
Dental and Oral Surgery at
Sinai Hospital; the first dental
internship at Sinai ws estab-
lished under his direction as
was the first oral surgery in-
ternship. Dr. Bloom helped to
organize the Sinai Hospital
Cleft Palate Habilitation Cen- Herbert Bloom
ter and became the director of
the program. He also counseled at Sinai Hos-
pital and served on the faculty of Wayne State
University's medical school.
In 1957, the Committee on Graduate Train-
ing, American Society of Oral Surgeons ap-
pointed him chairman, and he was chosen by
the society to serve as chief of the medical staff
on the S.S. Hope on its tour to Peru and
Guinea.
Dr. Bloom served as director of both the De-
troit Area Council on World Affairs and the

BETTY ARONOFF, 83, of
Oak Park, died Sept. 8. Mrs.
Aronoff was the beloved wife of
the late Nathan Aronoff. She is
survived by her sons and
daughters-in-law, Larry and
Joanne of Birmingham, Jerry
and Alicia of West Bloomfield,
Mervin and Sheila of West
Bloomfield; 11 grandchildren;
two great-grandchildren; sister
and brother-in-law, Bertha and
Max Sheldon of Bloomfield
Hills. Interment at Machpelah
Cemetery. Contributions may
be directed to a charity of one's
choice. Arrangements by the
Ira Kaufman Chapel.

FRIEDA ANSPACH, 83, of
Southfield, died Sept. 6. Mrs.
Anspach was a jewelry sales
representative. She was also a
member of Hadassah, ORT,
Temple Israel Sisterhood, Sinai
Guild and a longtime member
of Temple Israel.
Mrs. Anspach was the dear
sister of the late Erma
Gottshalk. She is survived by
her husband, Helmut; son and
daughter-in-law, Jeffrey and
Helen Anspach of Overland,

National Hemophilia Foundation. In 1971,
Dr. Bloom was named winner of the Michigan
Cancer Foundation's Distinguished Service
Award; he was a member of the foundation's
board of trustees since 1966.
Among the many other
awards to Dr. Bloom's credit
are Knights of Charity Award;
State of Israel Ben-Gurion
Award; Distinguished Service
Award, American College of
Oral/Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Dr. Bloom was the beloved
husband of the late Betty
Bloom. He is survived by his
wife, Judge Alice Gilbert; sons
and daughters-in-law, Stephen
and Linda of Bloomfield Hills,
Dr. Michael and Carol of
Bloomfield Hills; daughter and
son-in-law, Linda and Dr. Mar-
tin Weissman of Birmingham;
grandchildren, Karen and
Randy Jacobs, Joanne and
Jerold Fisher, James and Aileen
Bloom, David and Laura Bloom, David Weiss-
man, Meredith and David Kaplan and Paige
Weissman; great-grandchildren, Ashlee Ja-
cobs and Evan Bloom; sisters, Evelyn
Chattman and Lydia Erlichman Harrison. In-
terment at Clover Hill Park Cemetery. Con-
tributions may be directed to the Dr. Herbert
and Betty Bloom Memorial Fund do the Michi-
gan Cancer Foundation, 18831 West 12 Mile

SEYMOUR L. AXELROOD,
70, of Trenton, died Sept. 10.
Mr. Axelrood was a chemical
engineer for BASF in Wyan-
dotte and a member of the
American Chemical Society. He
is survived by his wife, Mae;
daughter and son-in-law, Debra
and James Kruz of Ann Arbor;
granddaughter, Sophia Kruz;
sister and brother-in-law, Faye
and Leonard Eisenberg of San
Diego; brothers-in-law and sis-
ters-in-law, Daniel and Estelle
Kletnick and Fred and Lor-
raine Kietnick. Interment at
Beth El Memorial Park. Con-

AZAROFF, 83, former Detroi-
ter of Miami Beach, Fla., died
Sept. 2. She was the beloved
wife of the late Phillip Cameron
and the late Jack Azaroff. She
is survived by her daughters
and sons-in-law, Gail and Jerry
Winter of Waterford, Conn.,
Paula and Fred Grinnell of Dal-
las; grandchildren, Wendy Win-
ter, Miriam and David Lieber,
Laura, Phillip and Aviva Grin-
nell; sister, Lillian Levine;
brother, Hyman Gastman. In-
terment at Vista Memorial
Gardens, Hialeah, Fla.

J JAN BARSHTZ, 86, of
Southfield, died Sept. 10. Mrs.
Barshtz was the loving mother
of the late Geraldine Bernice
Applebaum. She is survived by
