Mr. Handleman was a co-founder, chairman and chief executive officer of the Troy- based Handleman Company; he continued as director of the corporation until recently. Mr. Handleman twice co- chaired the Allied Jewish Cam- paign Israel Emergency Fund, and he and his wife annually hosted the Campaign's kick-off reception at their home. In the early 1970s, Mr. Handleman chaired the building committee for Temple Beth El; he was a life member and trustee of the temple. His interest in politics extended to his chairing the fi- nance committee for one of Sander Levin's gubernatorial bids. Among his many honors, Mr. Handleman treasured the Israel Prime Minister's medal, personally presented by Itzhak Rabin. Mr. Handleman's board memberships included the Jew- ish Welfare Federation of Met- ropolitan De Jewish Charities of Detroit, Sinai Hospital and Cleveland's Jewish Home for Aged. During World War II, he served with the U.S. Army Air Force, subse- quently becoming a member of the Jewish War Veterans. Mr. Handleman was the beloved husband of the late So- nia Handleman. Mr. Handle- man is survived by his sons and daughter-in-law, David of Birmingham, Philip and Mary of Birmingham; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Alex Kostovic of Belaire, Calif.; grandchildren, Sonja Pauline Kostovic, Natasha Alexandra Kostovic; brothers and sisters- in-law, Joseph and Sally, David and Marion, Moe and Francine; sister and brother-in-law, Cecil- ia and Burton Wade.
