erty close-up from the deck of a
ferry boat — exactly as so many
Jewish immigrants first gazed at
"Lady Liberty" — was memo-
rable.
Many passengers got off at
Liberty Island, but I stayed on
board for the next stop: Ellis Is-
land and its Museum of Immi-
gration, which documents in
meticulous and often dramatic
detail the immigrant experience.
Over 12 million immigrants —
including Jews from Eastern Eu-
rope — were processed here be-
fore they began new lives in
America. The museum's varied
exhibits are an ideal way to un-
derstand their experience.
A brief ferry ride brought me
back to Battery Park, where I
paused in the center of the park
to admire The Immigrants a
striking bronze sculpture of sev-
en figures, looking weary but
hopeful. "Dedicated to the peo-
ples of all nations who entered
America..." read the plaque.
The weekend also included a
visit to South Street Seaport with
its multi-level piers, boat tours.
On weekends, Wall Street be-
longs to the tourists. They were
posing in front of the statue of
George Washington, admiring
the stately buildings, or simply
strolling up and down.
The street, which is the nerve
center of finance, also has some
Jewish history. The New York
Stock Exchange began in 1792
when 24 brokers drew up a trade
agreement as they stood under a
tree at what is now #68 Wall
Street — and five of them were
Jewish.
Wall Street also has a syna-
gogue named after it. Despite its
name, the Wall Street Synagogue
is actually located on nearby
Beekeman Street; but it is close-
ly identified with the financial
district.
The modest building at #47
Beekman is headquarters for the
only congregation in Lower Man-
hattan. Many members of the Or-
thodox congregation are
observant Wall Street brokers
who come here for daily minyans.
"The congregation was founded
to served the business commu-
nity," explained the longtime rab-
bi, Meyer Hager, the son of the
congregation's founding rabbi.
The congregation was first or-
ganized in 1929 by a group of
prominent New Yorkers, who
used rented quarters in the loft
of an office skyscraper at 35
Maiden Lane.
Facilities include a 180-seat
sanctuary in Sephardic style on
the first floor, offices and a din-
ing room above, and on the roof
level, an unusual reminder of the
early Jewish settlers: a replica of
their first synagogue.
`The founding members want-
ed this congregation to be the link
to the early Jews who lived here,"
said the rabbi. "We're trying to
carry on a long tradition." 0
