FOR THE LAST 25 YEARS
mate this sophisticated grass-roots
machine that is clearly tapping
some elemental changes in the
American psyche.
For Jewish groups and the De-
mocratic Party alike, the past year
has been a relentless nightmare.
It is still difficult for many to be-
lieve their agony has been trig-
gered, in good measure, by the
kind of folks who watch Reverend
Robertson's "700 Club" television
ministry.
But Jews and Democrats alike
have compounded their misery by
failing to develop new positions
that might keep alive the com-
passionate goals of the glory years
of Democratic liberalism, while
taking into account the worrisome
economic changes that have made
yesterday's programs unsuited to
today's less hopeful climate.
We brush offReverend Robert-
son, the conspiracy theorist — and
in the process, we lose sight of the
fact that Mr. Reed and his politi-
cal team are addressing some real
and important concerns that
mainstream politicians have stu-
diously avoided.
This doesn't mean that Jews
should join the born-again politi-
cal crusade.
There is much in the Christian
Coalition agenda that threatens
Jewish security — including the
dangerous campaign to obliterate
the church-state wall.
But to debate the Christian
Coalition effectively, Jewish
groups need to recognize that this
is a group that is nearing political
maturity and that it is unusually
focused and cohesive.
In fact, the Christian Coalition
has taken a page from the book of
effective pro-Israel groups — it
has defined a set of goals on which
there is broad agreement — and
it has made a tactical decision to
put other, more decisive issues on
hold. It has pursued its consensus
goals with a clearness of focus that
stands out in the chaos of Wash-
ington.
We underestimate the Christ-
ian Coalition and we dismiss the
anger and frustration that have
fueled its ascent only at our own
peril. El
