have upset the Orthodox. Zvulun
Orley, secretary-general of the
National Religious Party and for-
mer director-general of the Edu-
cation Ministry, noted that the
Conservative and Reform
streams of Judaism have a tiny

them a substantial role in teach-
ing Jewish studies in the state
schools amounted to "taking a
stream of Judaism that comes
from the U.S., where perhaps it
suits Jewish life — and I'm not
even sure about that — and

Mr. Orley said.
Orthodox circles are consider-
ing a Supreme Court challenge.
Failing that, Mr. Orley said, "We
hope that after the elections in
another 15 months we will cor-
rect things."
But non-Orthodox educators
were excited to finally be "enter-
ing through the front door, not
the back door." In Rabbi Bandel's
view, Israel's school system had
just told the non-Orthodox,

Police In Gaza
Kill An Israeli
Jerusalem (JTA) — An Israeli
army reserve officer was shot
dead by Palestinian police after
driving through a roadblock in
the Gaza Strip.
The incident took place when
Lt. Col. Emmanuel Maloul, 48,
sped through a Palestinian road-
block after crashing through
three others, one of them set up
by the Israel Defense Force.
Israeli and Palestinian police
officials said they believed that
Lt. Col. Maloul had wanted to
commit suicide.
Israeli security sources said the
Palestinian police at the road-
block near Beit Hanoun had
opened fire only after they
thought that they were going td
be run over.
Lt. Col. Maloul was hit in the
chest by gunfire and taken to Shi-
fa Hospital in Gaza City. His
body was later handed over to Is-
raeli authorities.
Lt. Col. Maloul, a resident of
Kiryat Ono, last served as corn-
mander of a unit of trackers
Lt. Col. Maloul's widow told po-
lice that he had wanted to com-
mit suicide, Israeli and
Palestinian police officials said.
