But Ms. Gerut's rendition of
Yiddish songs like "Reyzele" and
"Shpil, Klezmer, Shpil!" sound
authentic, and the arrangements
are straightforward. We Are Here
is dedicated to preserving the lost
culture of Eastern European
Jews, and Ms. Gerut sticks to her
task without veering into too
much intepretation.
The songs on "Sleep My Child,"
which features Ms. Gerut, Judy
Frankel, Norman Janis and oth-
er Jewish artists, are also a little
soporific, as a collection of lulla-
bies should be. You may not be
able to get through the 20 tracks
without shloffing — dozing off.
Go drink a pot of strong coffee
— there are several gems on this
disc. The Ladino lullabies of the
exiled Spanish Jews, including
"Durme hermoza donzella"
("Sleep my beautiful damsel")
and "Durme mi angelico" ("Sleep
my little angel") have an exotic
flavor. "Layla, Layla" ("Night,
Night") is a smooth, floating song
that reminds one of clouds, and
the classic Yiddish "Yankele" is
a mournful cry.
As with "We Are Here," the
songs on Sleep My Child are
faithful to the original Jewish root
music. It also makes pleasant
background music for quiet
afternoon naps.
