Travel by pontoon boat across the lake and hike the island's trails guided by natural- ist Steve Metzer or historian Jim Laarman. The nature of Apple Island will be the topic of the Saturday, Sept. 16, excursions and history the topic of excursions that are sched- uled for Saturday, Oct. 7. Excur- sions depart from the boat launch on Pontiac Trail west or Orchard Lake Road at 8 a.m., 10 a.m. or noon. Each tour last just under two hours. This annual event features ac- tivities for the whole family, in- cluding a petting farm, sheep shearing, kids games, a puppet show at 2:30 p.m., moonwalk, typhoon balloons, arts and crafts and the musical performance of the Balduck Mountain Ram- blers. ._/ L
