hen Roseanne Han-
dler Simons, of
Bloomfield Hills,
planned a vacation to
Amsterdam, she wanted to visit
her friend Jacqueline van
Gelder whom she met 20 years
ago working on Kibbutz Ga'ash,
north of Tel Aviv. The two
women corresponded for a few
years, but then lost track of each
other.
Mrs. Simons called The Jew-
ish News and asked if there was
a Jewish paper in Amsterdam.
After receiving the name of Het
Nieuw Israelietisch Weekblad,
she called the Dutch Consulate
in Chicago to obtain the tele-
phone and fax number. She then
arranged to place an advertise-
ment in the Amsterdam Jewish
weekly paper.
Two weeks later, she received
a reply from Jacqueline, who
is married to Rob de Vries.
Mrs. Simons and her hus-
band Rudy arranged to meet
Jacqueline and her husband
in Amsterdam. The couples
spent the evening together,
reminiscing about camel rides
and traveling through Israel.
"I recognized her immediate-
ly. We exchanged addresses
and hope to correspond
again," said Mrs. Simons.
