"It's in its purest form the very
content of what continuity is
all about: Judaism has as a
tenet the Torah requirement
that we reach out and help one
another, and that we specifi-
cally don't charge interest.
"This is what we do for one
another, and it's so very im-
portant. We've had people
send us $5 with notes that say,
`You've turned my life around.
I'll donate more when I can."'
Indeed, in Exodus 22:24, the
Torah reads, "If you lend mon-
ey to my people, you shall not
lay interest." In this week's
Ruth Marcus: "The very content
of continuity."

Marlene Borman:
Securing the future.
the board, it's fun to see
where I was when I was go-
ing to medical school," said
Dr. Diem. "I remember
how we rebelled as stu-
dents because tuition was
going up to $900 a
semester. Now it's some-
thing like $50,000 to go for
a year. Kids coming out of
medical school are in hun-
dreds of thousands of dol-
lars of debt, so it's much
harder on a parent."
Dr. Diem has set up a loan
fund through Hebrew Free Loan
for osteopathic-school students.
Hebrew Free Loan gives out
interest-free loans up to $2,000.
Borrowers are given up to a year
to pay the loan back. The HFL
also administers loans granted
through the Neighborhood
Project, an incentive prograrp for
home buyers in designated areas
of Southfield and Oak Park.
"Some of our loans are to help
put people in a position to earn a
living," said HFL's Executive
Director Ruth Marcus. "We had
a person who needed to buy tools
to make dental prostheses. All he
needed was the money to get that
start."
Naum
Anna . and
Tsemekhman know firsthand
about getting that start. HFL
loaned the Ukrainian emigres
money to purchase their first car.
Once the loan was paid off, the
couple received a loan to start a
dry-cleaning business in Warren.
They have also borrowed to help
pay for their son Vadim's
University of Michigan educa-
tion.
"It's all a dream," said Mrs.
Tsemekhman. "We've been here
since 1989 and we've been able,
because of Hebrew Free Loan's
help, to start a life here."
Ms. Marcus emphasized that
every loan is processed confiden-
tially.
"This is not charity," she said.
Torah portion, Ki Teytzey, it
reads, "You shall not lend upon
interest to thy brother... ." Also,
the Talmud states that a loan is
better than an outright gift be-
cause it allows the borrower to
retain his pride and dignity.
The next 100 years? Maybe it
won't involve horses, or even cars
for that matter.
"We're thinking that far ahead
into the 21st century," Mrs.
Borman said. "It's that impor-
tant. We're securing the endow-
ment that will take us into the
future." El
Media Assaults
Anger Israel
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel has
called on Egypt's leaders to de-
nounce sharp attacks against Is-
rael that have recently appeared
in the Egyptian media.
The media assaults were
sparked by recent allegations
that members of the Israel De-
fense Force had killed Egyptian
prisoners of war during the 1956
Sinai Campaign and the 1967
Six-Day War.
The allegations, voiced recently
by Israeli war veterans and his-
torians, have raised a furor in Is-
rppl. and Egypt.
