But Jackson, who is expected
to announce his candidacy next
week, could face stiff competition
from Emil Jones and Alice
Palmer, both prominent state leg-
islators with good connections to
the Jewish community.
There is also the intriguing
possibility of a Jewish candidate
on the Republican side — Man-
ny Hoffman, the Cook County Re-
publican Chair.
Mr. Hoffman could benefit
from the 1990 redistricting that
included some far-South suburbs,
with a significant Jewish popu-
lation, in the 2nd Congressional
District.
"All of these are serious, solid
political leaders," said an official
with a major Jewish organization
in Chicago. "They all have histo-
ries of working well with the Jew-
ish community."
The race has other interesting
Jewish connotations.
After sweeping demographic
changes in Chicago's southeast
side, the seat became the domain
of former Rep. Gus Savage,
whose pronouncements about the
Jewish influence in politics reg-
ularly resulted in charges of anti-
Semitism.
In 1992, Mr. Reynolds defeat-
ed Mr. Savage, with a strong
boost from Jewish political ac-
tivists around the country.
Mr. Reynolds plans an an-
nouncement about his plans for
1996 over the weekend.
