Dinner that night was a qual- ified success. The Filipino wait- ers, who had never previously served kosher food, performed with some trepidation but no er- ror. On the other hand, the chick- en soup lacked a certain maturity; the carrots (summoned from a state of absolute frigidity) were still a bit chewy; and the ap- ple strudel somehow lacked the authentic flakiness, which it would have at subsequent meals. In fact, after the difficult be- ginning, Blass, Valier-Grossman and company settled into a rou- tine of kosher cooking for the rest of the voyage which their guests declared to be much better than any airline frozen kosher foods, certainly, and the equal of that served at the best kosher restau- rants anywhere. The contingent of kosher pas- sengers was seated in the cen- ter of the ship dining room, in a place of prominence, next to the captain's table. That first Sab- bath evening, they performed their ablutions, made the motzi, chanted the kiddush, ate, benched and sang "Sholom Ale- ichem" with joy and enthusiasm ... somewhat to the wonder and admiration of the non-Jewish passengers at the tables around them, many of whom had never before seen such a demonstration of religiosity. "It was a statement of equali- ty, that observant Jews are first- class citizens, not to be relegated to the corner of a dining-room, made to feel somehow 'strange' Or 'apart,"' remarked Rabbi Mar- vin Tokayer, who accompanied the group as its spiritual mentor. "We were not 'at the back of the bus' — but 'right up at the front of the bus,' the rabbi added. During the course of the voy- age, he would conduct the sever- al daily services, Sabbath services and Havdalah, and give talks on the Marco Polo's ports-of-call- which he had previously visited as a navy chaplain in the Far East and as rabbi of the Jewish congregation in Tokyo. Among the ports-of-call on this journey were Singapore, where a Sephardic Orthodox congrega- tion, Maghain Aboth, has func- tioned for more than 150 years; Semarang, in Java, where there had been a community of Russ- ian Jewish refugees in the 1920s, after the 1917 Russian Revolu- tion, and Bangkok, where there are not one but two congrega- tions. Both the existing commu- nities, in Singapore and Bangkok, are worth noting. CRUISING page 62 Watch for Our New Northwestern Highway Location!
