The Conservative Movement will
offer a special High Holiday
study on Thursday, Sept. 14,
12:30 to 1:30 p.m. with Rabbi Ir-
win Groner of Congregation
Shaarey Zedek. Rabbi Groner
will speak on "Justice and Com-
passion: An Introduction to the
Days of Awe." The program will
be held in the Jewish Federation
Max M. Fisher building, 6735
Telegraph Road. A light lunch
will be available at noon. There
is a charge for lunch and reser-
vations are requested; call JTS,

The study session will explore
the relevance of the Yamin Ha
Noraim, the High Holy Day pe-
riod, for Jews today. The High
Holy Day study kicks off the Con-
servative Movement weekly
Torah study held on Thursday
in the Federation building. Area
Conservative rabbis and educa-
tors examine the parsha, the
week's biblical portion, using tra-
ditional and contemporary com-
mentaries. The Torah and lunch
are sponsored by the Jewish The-
ological Seminary, the Rabbini-
cal Assembly of Metro Detroit
and the United Synagogue for
Conservative Judaism, Michigan
Region.

will learn Masekhet Brakhot, the
first volume of the Talmud,
which focuses on Jewish prayer.
Study with Rabbi Daniel
Nevins will be offered at Adat
Shalom Synagogue starting
Wednesday, Sept. 13. There will
be two sessions available on 10
consecutive Wednesdays: lunch
time, noon to 1:30 p.m. and in the
evenings, 7:30 to 9 p.m. Study
with Rabbi Aaron Bergman will
be offered at Congregation Beth
Abraham Hillel Moses starting
on Thursday, Oct. 12. There will
be 10 Thursday evenings 7:30-
9 p.m.
Attendance is open to all
members of the community and
no background is required.There
is a nominal registration and ma-
terials fee. For those attending
the Wednesday lunch at Adat
Shalom, there is a charge for
lunch.

At The JPM

The Jimmy Prentis Morris Jew-
ish Community Center will pre-
sent a lunch and learn series on
"Celebrate Your Judaism." There

Studies Talmud

The Jewish Theological Semi-
nary is encouraging Jews
throughout the United States to
study Talmud and has initiat-
ed the National Havruta Pro-
gram. In Detroit, two area rabbis
will be offering Talmud study us-
ing the traditional havruta or
"buddy"system whereby stu-
dents are grouped into small
study sessions according to back-
ground and familiarity with the
Mishnah and Gemorah text. The

opening breakfast at which
Mitch Albom, nationally syndi-
cated columnist, will be the guest
speaker.
Members of Temple Israel
Brotherhood are invited at $10
and guests at $15 for advance
reservations. At the door the cost
will be $20.
