"Mature enough to be wise, young enough to
take you well into the 21st Century"

He practices year-round, one
hour per day, five days a week at
the Oak Park Jewish Communi-
ty Center. The veteran still
swims 80-90 laps an hour.
As a competition gets closer,
Schulman spends more time
training. A few months before a
contest, he increases his swim-
ming to seven days a week for at
least an hour each day.
Schulman retired this past
June from Highland Park Com-
munity College, where he was a
biology professor for 35 years. His
wife retired at the same time from
the Oak Park School District
where she taught elemen-
tary school.
The couple has two mar-
ried children.
QUOTE: "I have enjoyed swim-
ming all my life. I am in per-
fect health and take no
medication," Schulman says.
"I especially like swimming
because it is an individual
and noncontact sport. It is
uncommon to suffer an in-
jury, and the sport keeps me
physically fit overall."

Schulman won a gold medal in
the 100-meter freestyle with a
time of 1:03. He also won two
bronze medals: one in the 100-
meter backstroke in 1:27,
and the other in the 50-me-
ter freestyle with a time of
0:30.
His medal-winning per-
formances qualified him for
the National Senior Swim-
ming Olympics, which will
be held next summer in Salt
Lake City. He plans to com-
pete in the backstroke and
freestyle.
Schulman says his best
stroke is the freestyle be-
cause "it is hard, fast and
powerful." However, his fa-
vorite stroke is the back-
stroke, which "is more
artistic, graceful and relax-
ing."
THE SKINNY: Schulman has
been swimming for more
than 55 years. He began
swimming competitively for
Detroit's Central High
School varsity team at the
age of 15. In addition, Schulman
swam for the University of De-
troit for four years, where he also
lettered in the sport.
He was in charge of the Jewish
Community Center pool when the
building was on Woodward in De-
troit. Schulman also lifeguarded
for many summers at Metropoli-
tan Beach.

NAME: Kathy Lott
TEAM: Grosse Ile High School
golf
DEED: Lott, 16, is entering her
junior year at Grosse Ile High
School. She is one of four Jewish
students at the school, and the
only one on the varsity golf team.

Last season, Lott was voted
All-State by the Class-B Golf
Coaches Association of Michigan.
In 1994, her freshman year, she
received All-State Honorable
Mention.
Lott was selected by school of-
ficials as one of the MVPs of last
spring's Grosse Ile High School's
athletic teams.
