lamps on either side of the bed were cus-
tom made by a New Orleans artist. Above
the white wicker plant stand is an old por-
trait of a girl that Powers found antiquing
in Saline.
The 4-inch wood shutters on the win-
dow remind Powers of Italy.
The wood bench at the foot of the bed
is covered in white. Opposite the bed is the
sitting area. "We have coffee here every
morning and share a few minutes before
we start our day," Powers explains.
Facing each other are two Baker chairs
in a white Canovas fabric. The ottoman is
dressed in a Ralph Lauren stripe. An old
brass trivet table, two brass reading lights
and a wood spiral table with a sterling
pitcher complete the cozy setting.
In the center of one wall is an old French
stone fireplace with Verde marble surround.
Two topiaries grace the mantle, above
which hangs a grand 18th-century French
mirror. The wood of the adjoining wall
units, which hold the entertainment cen-
ter and Mrs. Powers' large collection of
magazines, has five coats of white lacquer.
Displayed on its shelves is a collection of
ceramic head vases. On another wall, two
Squeaky Carnwaith lithographs hang above
an antique tortoise desk.
In the lower level, the recreation room
was converted into a top-of-the-line exer-
cise room. The children's entertainment
room, built under the addition, features a
pool table and ping-pong room.
The designer's studio-office, located in
the right wing of the house, is both spacious
and airy. The fountain at the rear of the of-
fice was added as a noise barrier when the
children were small.
Next to the white canvas chaise is a 9 1/2-
foot mahogany armoire that Powers found
in Nice. The charming French doll house
that she bought on the French Riviera
opens to reveal a miniature brothel. "I
didn't open it when I bought it — what a
surprise when I got it home," she recalls.
When Powers isn't working, she's either
traveling, playing tennis, antiquing or col-
lecting art. Other than a few improvements
to her son's room, she does not foresee any
new structural changes. "I'll change the
look with art and antiques, she says." I ler
verdict on her newly expanded home? "We
absolutely love it!" LI
