The antique cherry-wood table is sur-
rounded by black leather and metal chairs,
while matching bar stools offer a casual eat-
ing area at the counter. On the wall across
from the table is an oil animal scene by
Louisa Matthias Dotter. Hand-painted Ital-
ian dishes are displayed behind the glass
cabinet doors. Hanging brass and glass light
fixtures from the 1920s, which the owner
found in Atlanta, illuminate the counter,
while the skylight above the table washes
the room with sunlight.
Family photos personalize the desk area,
and a wonderful antique scale holds fruit
on the counter. The owners are especial-
ly fond of their professional Bunn Omatic
coffee maker. "We are both very much into
coffee and all we have to do is push a but-
ton," Powers explains. Beyond the kitchen
is the pantry, laundry room and half bath.
In the 50 x 20-foot great room, a long
glass wall is divided by the travertine fire-
place. The clerestory windows on the op-
posite wall add additional light.
The designer made substantial changes
to update and soften the massive room. She
left the 3 1/2-foot travertine walkway but

replaced the hand-woven Berber rug with
an iroko wood floor in a high-shine
polyurethane finish. The two large Atelier
International sofas and matching chairs that
flank the fireplace, originally done in camel
leather, were recovered in a white wool che-
nille fabric. A hand-painted cloisonne table
sits between the two chairs. Antique
needlepoint pillows from Belgium and
France add a vintage touch. The Knoll
chrome and glass table was replaced with
a large, old Chinese wood coffee table re-
finished in a dark stain. Interesting objects
displayed on the table include a Ming bowl
from Bali, a Beatrice Wood earthenware
pitcher, an antique tea caddie, Baccarat
glass, a handmade scrapbook and a Japan-
ese planter that Powers fills with orchids.
To the left of the conversation area, the
round walnut burl game table made in
France is contrasted with Dutch contem-
porary chairs covered in a white cotton can-
vas. Next to the black baby grand Steinway
