ered in off-white raw silk. Above the chair
is an oil by Ellen Phelan from Suzanne
Hilberry Gallery.
To the left of the vestibule is the library,
where an extensive sound system and three
televisions are housed in the oak enter-
tainment center. "My husband loves mu-
sic and uses earphones to watch the
different TVs," Mrs. Powers explains.
In front of the glass wall on the left are
two large love seats covered in a Gretchen
Bellinger chick-pea colored velvet fabric.
A matching chair and ottoman face the en-
tertainment center, as does a new Cy Mann
leather recliner.
In the center of the room, the glass and
Lucite table sits on the large, square an-
tique Herez Persian rug. Above the chair
on the side wall is a surreal painting by John
Clem Clark. The leopard ottoman with
rams' legs injects pattern and texture.
On the right wall, a Picasso ceramic hangs
next to the oak bookshelves. To the left,
two Red Groom lithographs hang above
two black and white photographs by Mark
Chester.
Antique Herend pieces, handmade sil-
ver and gold warriors from Italy, and a
ceramic dog made by the Powers' son ac-
cent the room. "I display things that my
children made all through my house," says
Powers.
The hallway on the right leads to the
powder room and kitchen. The powder
room walls were replastered to make them
appear old. A trompe l'oeil design in soft
Mediterranean blue, hand painted by
Grosse Pointe artist Jan Hume, creates a
classic look. A round mirror hangs above
the custom wrought-iron vanity table with
bone ceramic tile inserts.
The lovely piece of old Italian lace that
hangs from the vanity adds elegance. En-
hancing the top are a white porcelain jar,
a topiary and a ceramic piece made by the
owners' daughter. A tortoise bamboo Vic-
torian table serves as a towel stand.
The professional-quality kitchen was re-
done seven years ago. Featuring white
SieMatic cabinets with brass rail trim and
hardware, Viking gas stove, chrome side by
side Sub-Zero units, and Verde marble
counter tops, the kitchen was designed for
Mr. Powers. "He loves to cook," says his
wife.
