piano are two ottomans, on brass bases, art-
fully covered in Hermes scarves.
To the right of the fireplace is a magnif-
icent sterling-silver and mahogany meat
carver and server that the owners found in
Paris. The 4 x 10 foot dining table in red
rust marble with full white fossils had to be
delivered with a crane. "Supposedly, this
marble was used on Napoleon's tomb,"
Powers explains.
Two stunning matching Baccarat vases
purchased in Paris add elegance to the
table. Powers replaced her wood and cane
Mies van der Rohe dining chairs with a set
of six side chairs and two host chairs
refinished in a gold and black stain and
covered in a white sailcloth fabric with
double-nailhead trim. A different-colored
tassel on each chair injects a touch of
whimsy.
Resting on the high-gloss white laminate
server with marble top are silver candle-
sticks that belonged to Mrs. Powers' grand-
mother, and a silver tea set that her parents
gave her as a house-warming gift. On the
wall opposite the dining area is a striking
7-foot textured painting with colored stones
by John Torreano. Next to it are two por-
traits of Mrs. Powers by Andy Warhol. "I
always wanted a portrait by him, so I went
to New York and he took Polaroid's," she
explains.
"He did one with a red background and
the other in pink and sent them to me to
decide which one I wanted. Shortly after
he sent them, he died, so I paid for and kept
them both."
The wet bar, nestled between the library
and great room and originally made in white
Formica, was redone in maple with mir-
rored cabinets and inlaid ebony shelves.
The colorful bowl of beaded fruit on the
bar ledge and a work in mixed media by
Lee Hoffman on the wall next to the bar
suggest a playful attitude.
Another significant change appears on
the handrail of the stairs and open walkway
that lead to the family bedrooms. Oak rail-
ing with Plexiglas panels was replaced with
an elegant iron and brass work of art.
"I copied this rail from the San Pietro
hotel in Positano, Italy," explains Powers.
"I found an iron maker in Milwaukee
to make it and we waited over two
years for it. The leaves are made of
