Beyond 2000/Bernard Moray

(continued from page 66)

People are emphasizing easy living and
comfort. Homes will become "safe havens"
from the outside world. Video rentals, take-
out food orders and mail-order sales will
continue to increase because people are
spending more time in their home.
What will these cocoons of tomorrow look
like? Most people will replace their formal
dining areas with a comfort room that in-
cludes recliners and customized furniture.
The customized furniture will meet spe-
cial needs. For example, a person with a
back problem will have a customized chair
designed to alleviate his pain.
As people begin to entertain more guests
and visitors in their home, they will also
place a stronger emphasis on quality crafts-
manship and furniture that lasts. The em-
phasis on comfort doesn't just mean a
switch from chrome and glass to leather and
suede. Home furnishing styles of tomor-
row also will reflect a slowdown from the
frantic pace of the '80s and '90s. People will
put their feet up more, grab the remote and
connect to a new world of entertainment.

An emphasis
on quality
craftsmanship.

Electronics will modify our way of life.
Family rooms will give way to larger media
rooms, which will include elaborate enter-
tainment centers and media centers that
house larger televisions, video recorders and
disk players.
Changes in the workplace and advances
in technology also will lead to more home
offices that will include computers, fax ma-
chines and the office technology of tomor-
row. These offices will accommodate the
increasing number of self-employed work-
ers and telecommuters during the day,
while serving as workrooms and homework
areas for children in the evenings.
If the future brings a leaner economy, the
increase in living-room space will be offset
by a decrease in the size of bedrooms.
Overall, the homes of tomorrow will be elab-
orate, comfortable and safe havens where
people work, entertain and shop the Inter-
net of the 21st century.
